Summer Camp FAQs

Still have questions about 4th + 5th Grade Camp? No problem! Check out this list of FAQs below.

what are the camp dates?

July 6–10

Where is The Grove and what is it like?

The Grove at Red Oak Lake is located on Rocky Point Rd. in Cordova. When you’re there, you would never guess you’re in Memphis. The entire campus is surrounded by trees, and it is a peaceful respite from the busyness of the city.

All of the facilities are air-conditioned and in great shape. The Grove is owned by Faith Baptist Church, and it is well run by camp staff.

Can I come and visit my student at camp?

No. Even though The Grove is only 10 minutes away, we treat our Summer Camp like we’re 200 miles away. Going away to camp is an important part of a student’s development where they learn they can accomplish things without mom or dad. So, we ask that you not just “drop by” because “you were in the neighborhood.”

My student has never stayed away from home. Are you sure I can’t come and visit?

We get it. We really do. You’re nervous. If your student has never stayed away from home, we encourage you to give them a test run before camp. A night at a family member’s house or with a trusted friend will help prepare your student for summer camp. And…you might just find you enjoy the quiet.

But what if my student gets homesick?

Learning you can accomplish things without mom and dad can be tough, but we know your student can do it. Typically, if a student gets homesick during camp, it’s on Tuesday night. Our counselors will help your student remember all the fun things they’re doing at camp and remind them that you are praying for them. Almost every time, by Wednesday morning, our students are over their homesickness and ready for a great day!

Who are the counselors at camp?

Our counselors are parents, young adults, college students, and high school students who love the Lord and enjoy serving with preteens. Every adult counselor fills out an application, provides references, and submits to a background check. Every high school volunteer is interviewed to ensure they are mature enough to serve with preteens.

What is the lodging like? How do you determine who is in each cabin?

The majority of our students will stay in cabins throughout the week. Cabins typically hold between 10-20 beds, and every cabin will have two to three counselors. There is also a Bunkhouse and a Lodge that hold more beds.

When you register, you can make three roommate requests. We cannot always honor all three requests, but we will honor, at least, one of your requests.

Is there anything fun to do or does everyone just sit around and sing “Kumbaya”?

The Grove is the most fun place in Memphis! Here’s a list of all the fun things to do: Pool, water slides, boats, 50-foot tall swings, ropes course, Bazooka Ball, zip line, team games, and a blob (5th grade only). There’s definitely no time to get bored.

Can my student bring their phone?

No. We ask that all electronic devices be left at home. Counselors have the authority to take up any electronic devices they see a student using. The device will be given back at the end of the week.

How will I know what’s going on during the week?

We will post pictures and updates throughout the week on our Facebook page. You can find us at www.facebook.com/Bellevue45Ministry.

My student has a doctor’s appointment/birthday party/sports practice during camp. Can I pick them up and bring them back?

No. Remember, we’re really 200 miles away, not just 10 minutes away. If a student has to leave, for whatever reason, they are not allowed to come back.
