Faith Talk:

Kids love celebrating birthdays! Use this popular idea of celebrating Jesus’ birthday with a symbolic birthday cake.

In advance, bake the chocolate cake layers as directed (you will use only one chocolate layer). Prepare the white cake mix and separate into two bowls. Add red food coloring to one bowl and green to the other. Bake as directed.

Gather your family to assemble the cake and discuss the symbolism.

Begin with the chocolate cake layer and cover with white frosting. Add the red cake layer and cover with white frosting. Finally, add the green cake layer. Cover the entire cake with white frosting.

Decorate the border with red hearts. Draw a six‑pointed star on top of the cake. Place the red candle in the center of the star.

Symbolism:

Round cake layers—Jesus came into the world.
Black layer—All people have sinned.
Red layer—Jesus’ blood covers our sin.
Green layer—We have new life in Jesus and begin to grow.
Frosting—Righteousness and purity of Jesus
Red hearts—Christians are Jesus’ witnesses around the world.
Gold/yellow star—The Bethlehem star pointed the way to Jesus.
Red candle—Jesus came into the world to bring Light.

Light the red candle. Each person should be given a small birthday candle. Read the Christmas story from Luke 2 and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus.

Individuals take turns lighting their candle from the red candle and placing their smaller candles on the top of the cake.

Jesus came as the Light of the world. When we accept Jesus’
gift of life, Jesus says that we, too, are the light to the world.
We shine His light for everyone to see when we point people
to Jesus.

Close your birthday party by singing “Silent Night.” Pray, thanking God for sending His Son into the world. John 3:16

“God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again.” (John 3:17, The Message)
