HUNGRY, HUNGRY THANK YOU’S
Things you’ll need:
- Plastic spoon for each person
- OR Hungry, Hungry Hippo game
In the following scripture passage, we learn specific things God desires for us to do. Read these verses together:
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.”
Discuss the three things from this verse that is God’s will for us (be cheerful, pray, and thank God). Discuss ways to obey God within your family as well as with other authority.
Are there things that you are naturally thankful for? What things may be more difficult to be thankful for? Share examples of how those difficult things can benefit us (studying for a hard test will help us gain knowledge, being nice to a mean student in class will help us understand how to love like Jesus loves).
If you own the Hungry, Hungry Hippo game, set it up to play. If you do not own the game, design a similar game of “Marbles and Spoons.” Place 20-30 marbles on a plate and give each person a spoon. When the game begins, everyone tries to scoop up and collect as many marbles as possible using only their spoon.
Advise the kids that the winner has not yet been determined. Each person can be a winner if they can name a blessing for each ball or marble they have collected. Take turns sharing a season of thanksgiving. Play several rounds.
Emphasize that our joy is more full when we focus on our blessings. Being thankful is a choice we make every day and in every situation.
Heavenly Father, on Thanksgiving Day
We bow our hearts to You and pray.
We give You thanks for all You’ve done
Especially for the gift of Jesus, Your Son.
