Major Duties:

The employee will primarily be responsible for preparing monthly financial statements, maintaining general ledger accuracy, bank reconciliations, cash flow reporting, budgeting, and overseeing the work of accounts payable clerks, the bookkeeper, and the cashier.

Specific Tasks:

  • Direct and supervise employees in the Accounting and Finance office.
  • Establish and communicate policies and procedures for the Accounting and Finance office.
  • Implement controls to safeguard cash and other assets of the church.
  • Prepare and distribute the monthly financial reports, including cash flow projection and budget distribution reports, for all departments.
  • Prepare the annual financial budget for the Budget Advisory Group’s approval.
  • Prepare the Annual Association Report.
  • Prepare construction reports.
  • Reconcile multiple bank statements and oversee banking activity each month.
  • Work closely with independent auditors to prepare and complete the annual audit.
  • Interface with departmental directors to provide information, assistance, and other services related to financial accounting.
  • Work closely with the Payroll Clerk in making sure all payroll items are properly accounted for and recorded in the general ledger.
  • Make accurate and timely payments of accounts payable and tax liabilities.
  • Implement and oversee all purchasing procedures.
  • Ensure all credit card statements are recorded in general ledger.

Supervisor’s Philosophy:

The employee must be task-oriented, precise, detail-oriented, and service-oriented to meet the needs of all internal and external clients. The supervisor will utilize a close management style until the job has been mastered and until trust is earned. Following that period the employee will work with a high degree of independence and responsibility.

Days and Hours:

8:15 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday is the regular work schedule. There will be times when overtime is required. After-hours meetings will occur rarely.

Work Environment:

There is freedom to improve work processes. The work environment is not rigid; however, a high degree of discipline and attention-to-detail are required. The employee will be required to handle confidential information, and any breech of confidence could result in termination of employment. There will be times when the volume of work will create stress, and the employee is expected to patiently work through those periods. There will be other times when the work cannot be accomplished during normal work hours, so the employee will have to be flexible with their schedule to complete their work.

Specific Skills Required:

The employee must have a thorough understanding of financial accounting principles. The employee must be skillful in dealing with others and be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Equally important, this position requires an individual with a high degree of integrity and honesty, someone who respects complete confidentiality in all areas of responsibility. An uncompromising, unquestionable character must be reflected in fact and in appearance to peers and co-workers at all times.

Education Required:

A bachelor’s degree in accounting is required; a master’s degree is a plus.

Certificate or License Required:

CPA is a plus

Specific Experience Required:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ work experience in a similar environment
  • Experience working with ADP Workforce Now and Workforce Manager
  • Experience working with Sage Intacct accounting software (preferred)

Physical Abilities:

The employee must be able to sit at a computer and enter data for several hours a day, looking at a computer screen for long periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will regularly be required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The employee must regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
