Revive Us Again:
Praying for Spiritual Awakening—for Such a Time as This
“There are many wonderful things going on in our Southern Baptist Convention. We are planting 100 churches a month, our International Mission Board is putting more and more missionaries on the field, and God is raising up many godly people to preach the Gospel. We have challenges, too—but there is hope because there is blood on the cross, the tomb is empty, and the throne is occupied. We do not serve a dead savior. We serve a living God.”
—Steve Gaines, Southern Baptist Convention President
SBC – Day One
Opening and Welcome
Bellevue’s Minister of Music and Praise team began by leading attendees in worship. Bro. Steve was then presented the gavel and called business to order. Grant Gaines, Bro. Steve’s son, opened the Convention with a Scripture reading from Isaiah 64:1–12 and prayed, asking God to “Rend the heavens and come down…” as we seek revival in our churches.
Honoring America and Recognition of Veterans
Each branch of the military was recognized during a special time of prayer for America’s troops. “For such a time as this, our troops need our daily prayer… For such a time as this, let us remain faithful stewards of our freedom.”
—Former US Army Chief of Chaplains, Douglas Carver
Cooperative Program Report: Your Money at Work
In the 2016–17 budget, Bellevue gave $1 Million to the Cooperative Program. During the Convention, attendees saw the result of your giving through ministries such as the following:
Crossover Evangelism Report
Crossover is an evangelism event presented by the North American Mission Board (NAMB) in an effort to reach the community in which the Convention is held. This year’s event on June 11 saw 3,549 professions of faith in Phoenix. Pray for the June 2018 Harvest America event that will take place in Dallas.
Resonate Church Network
Resonate Church Network seeks to plant churches on college campuses, currently ministering to students in five cities in the Pacific Northwest. To date more than 700 college students have come to Christ. With more than 21 million college students in America, Resonate’s vision is to plant 21 churches by 2021.

God can do more through the power of his Holy Spirit in five minutes than you can do on your own in 50 years.
Introduction of Past Presidents and Pastor’s Presidential Address
SBC Presidents from the past decade were recognized as Bro. Steve thanked them for their leadership in the Convention. Prior to his Presidential Address, his wife, Donna, led us in prayer for the convention and his leadership. “We come together to advance the Gospel and make much of the name of Jesus. Make our hearts good soil to bring about a great harvest in each of our lives to impact our churches, community, our nation, and the nations. Unite us in Your Spirit, give us one heart and one mind that we may do Your business…” During his Address Bro. Steve led a sermon entitled “Every Christian is a Minister” from Acts 13. He reminded all Christians to minister to God and allow Him to minister to you, which empowers you to minister to others.
SBC Announces Partnership with Ramsey Stewardship Solutions
Noting Bellevue as an example of a successful church-wide, financial stewardship initiative—the SBC announced a new partnership with Dave Ramsey’s Stewardship Solutions for churches of all sizes. Recognizing that personal debt is holding believers back from fulfilling the intentions God has placed on their hearts, the SBC’s goal is to lead people to financial freedom and practice biblical stewardship.
Evening Worship Service
Bellevue’s Praise Team and Worship Band, directed by Mark Blair and Steve Wiggins, joined with a choir made up of four Phoenix-area churches to lead worship. As Tuesday’s session closed, the International Mission Board (IMB) commissioned a number of new missionaries to take the Gospel to the nations. Answering God’s call on their lives, these individuals will Share Jesus in East Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, North Africa, the Middle East, Sub-Sahara Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
