This episode introduces the prophetic book of Haggai, focusing on the post-exilic period when the people of Israel had returned from Babylonian captivity and began to rebuild the temple. The teaching addresses their initial enthusiasm that waned into disappointment and disobedience, leading to God's call for repentance and recommitment to rebuilding God's house.
