Things you’ll need:
- Eggs
- Added ingredients for making omelets
- 1 “rotten” egg discolor an egg with a marker or dye
Faith Talk: Plan a special breakfast meal or “breakfast-for-dinner”. Gather the family and take individual omelet orders. Commonly added ingredients are cheese, onions, mushrooms, sausage, etc. As one parent cooks the omelets, family members can help set the table, pour beverages, and assist with cooking. Discuss the value of listening carefully to preferences and following instructions. After your family begins eating, advise your family that you have something to confess.
You noticed one of the eggs was rotten before cooking. However, you decided to use the bad egg anyway to make sure you had enough food. Wait for your family’s reactions before revealing that you were teasing. Show the pretend marked “rotten” egg as a talking point. Discuss the possible results if you had chosen to use a rotten egg. Someone’s omelet could have tasted bad and possibly made them sick.
“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.” James 2:10
Just like one rotten egg can ruin the whole omelet, one sin ruins the whole person. One sin makes a person a sinner and we have all sinned, thus, we are called sinners. Romans 3:23–24 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Discuss how sin affects our lives. Who has the solution for our rottenness? Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin and rottenness.
Thank God for sending us His solution. “We thank you, Jesus, for loving us. Even though our sin made us like the rotten egg, You paid for our sin and offered us a cure for our rottenness. We thank you for the gift of forgiveness. Help us tell others about You. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.”
